What currency is used in Bulgaria?

Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian lev, written as BGN. The word “lev” means “lion” in old Bulgarian, symbolizing strength and pride. The lev is pegged to the euro, which keeps it very stable. You’ll see famous Bulgarian writers, painters, and historic landmarks on the banknotes. Cash is still widely used, but cards work fine in most stores and restaurants. ATMs are easy to find in all major cities like Sofia and Plovdiv. The lev has been a reliable currency through Bulgaria’s economic transition toward the European Union.
