Cambodia’s official currency is the Cambodian riel, written as KHR. But in reality, U.S. dollars are used just as much, sometimes even more. Prices in cities are often quoted in dollars, with small change given back in riel. The bills feature kings, temples, and symbols of Khmer culture. Cash is the main way to pay, but cards are slowly becoming more common. The riel’s value is low, so people often carry big stacks for everyday expenses.
