Cyprus uses the euro, written as EUR. It switched to the euro in 2008, leaving behind the Cypriot pound. Using the euro makes it simple to travel or trade across Europe. Cash and cards are both used everywhere, with ATMs easy to find. Cypriot euro coins have unique designs showing ancient symbols and ships. In the northern part of the island, though, the Turkish lira is used instead. The euro connects the Republic of Cyprus firmly to the European Union’s economic zone.
