Eritrea uses the Eritrean nakfa, written as ERN. It’s been the official currency since 1997, shortly after independence. The nakfa is pegged to the U.S. dollar to maintain stability. Banknotes show national heroes, cultural symbols, and historic landmarks. Cash is dominant for everyday purchases, as electronic payments are limited. Exchange offices and banks in Asmara handle foreign currencies for travelers. The nakfa is a symbol of Eritrea’s independence and national pride.
