The capital of Burundi is Gitega. It became the official capital in 2019, replacing Bujumbura, which remains the country’s main economic center. Gitega sits in the heart of the country and is smaller and calmer than Bujumbura. It’s known for its rolling hills, traditional drum performances, and the National Museum of Burundi. The city has a mild climate thanks to its elevation, making it pleasant year-round. While not a big tourist destination yet, it offers a glimpse into authentic Burundian culture. Travelers often pass through on their way to nearby nature reserves or Lake Tanganyika.
