The official languages of Tuvalu are Tuvaluan and English. Tuvaluan is spoken by nearly everyone and used in daily life, local media, and cultural events. English is used in schools, government, and international communication. Tuvaluan belongs to the Polynesian language family and is similar to Samoan and Tokelauan. Most Tuvaluans are bilingual, comfortably switching between Tuvaluan and English. The language carries deep cultural meaning and connection to the islands’ heritage. Its use helps preserve Tuvalu’s traditions and sense of community despite its small population.
