The official language of Yemen is Arabic. The Yemeni dialects of Arabic are used in daily life and have a warm, expressive tone. Modern Standard Arabic is used in schools, government, and media. In some regions, you’ll also find people speaking Mehri, Soqotri, and other South Arabian languages. English is taught in schools and used in business, though not widely spoken outside cities. Many Yemenis are bilingual in Arabic and another local language. The language reflects Yemen’s ancient history and rich tribal culture.
