The official language of Zambia is English. It’s used in schools, government, and media. However, most Zambians also speak one or more of the 70+ local languages, such as Bemba, Nyanja, Tonga, and Lozi. In daily life, these local languages are used for family and community communication. English serves as the unifying language across different ethnic groups. Many Zambians are bilingual or multilingual, switching easily between English and their native language. The mix of languages adds to the country’s friendly and culturally diverse character.
