The Maldives has a population of about 520,000 people. Most residents live on the capital island, Malé, while many smaller islands are sparsely populated. The population is growing steadily, driven by natural increase and strong public health systems. Urbanization is high, with most people concentrated in a few main islands. The Maldivian population is young and well-educated, with tourism providing most jobs. Despite limited land area, living standards are among the highest in South Asia.
