Suriname has a population of about 640,000 people. Most residents live along the northern coast, especially in and around the capital, Paramaribo. The population growth is modest, with many young people moving abroad for work and study. Suriname is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in South America, with people of Indian, African, Javanese, Indigenous, and European descent. Urbanization is high, but rural life and rainforest communities remain important. The small population enjoys a relaxed pace of life and strong cultural mix.
