East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste, is relatively safe but still developing. Petty crimes like pickpocketing can occur in Dili, the capital. Rural areas are very peaceful, though infrastructure can be basic. Political protests happen occasionally but are usually non-violent. Roads outside the city are rough and require careful driving. Locals are friendly and welcoming, happy to see foreign visitors. Overall, East Timor is a safe but off-the-beaten-path destination that rewards careful travelers.
