Togo is fairly safe for tourists, though it’s best to stay alert in urban areas. Petty theft and pickpocketing can occur in Lomé and crowded markets. Violent crime is uncommon, especially toward foreigners. Roads are sometimes poorly maintained, so rural travel can be challenging. Political demonstrations occur occasionally but are generally peaceful. Locals are friendly and helpful toward visitors. With normal precautions, Togo is a comfortable and safe country to visit.
