Yes, Jefferson considered creating the University of Virginia one of his proudest achievements. He designed the layout of the campus and helped choose the first professors. His goal was to make a school focused on independent thinking rather than religious teaching. Jefferson believed education was the key to a strong democracy. He wanted students to learn everything from science to philosophy in a free and open environment. The university became one of the most respected in the country. Jefferson even wrote that accomplishment on his tombstone.
