After serving as Washington’s vice president, Adams was the natural next choice for leadership. The election was messy and full of drama between early political factions. Adams won by a narrow margin and ended up with Jefferson as his vice president, even though they were rivals. Back then, the system worked differently, and the runner-up became VP. Adams tried to balance things out despite the tension between parties. His presidency started during a pretty stressful political climate. He stepped into the job at a time when the young nation was still figuring itself out.
