Adams played a huge role behind the scenes during the Revolution, pushing Congress to take bold steps. He convinced hesitant members that independence was the only real option. Adams also helped draft the Declaration of Independence, even if Jefferson wrote most of it. He was sent to Europe to secure support and loans for the new nation. His diplomatic work helped keep the revolution alive financially. He spent years away from home trying to win allies. Without his persistence, the U.S. might not have survived the war.
