He was nicknamed “Old Rough and Ready” because of his tough, informal leadership style in the military.
Taylor never voted in a presidential election before becoming president himself.
He preferred wearing old farm clothes even during important events, which annoyed Washington elites.
His daughter briefly married Jefferson Davis, who later became president of the Confederacy.
Taylor didn’t want to expand slavery into new territories, surprising many Southern politicians.
He died just 16 months into his term, making his presidency one of the shortest in U.S. history.
Despite being president, he stayed so humble that he sometimes introduced himself simply as “Zachary Taylor, soldier.”
