What did John Quincy Adams do after leaving the presidency?

Instead of retiring, Adams went back into public service as a member of the House of Representatives. He became one of the strongest voices against slavery and fought to defend the right to petition Congress. Adams argued landmark cases before the Supreme Court, including the Amistad case, where he defended kidnapped Africans fighting for their freedom. People respected him for sticking to his beliefs no matter the cost. His congressional career lasted longer than his presidency. Many believe his greatest achievements happened after the White House. He worked right up until the day he collapsed on the House floor.
