That run focused on opposing the expansion of slavery, which was a big shift from his earlier positions. He didn’t win, but his campaign helped push the slavery debate to the national spotlight. He spent much of his retirement writing and traveling, including a long trip through Europe. People still visited him for political advice because he had decades of experience. His later life shows how much he continued evolving in his beliefs. He stayed a respected—if complicated—figure long after he left office.
