Harrison was a member of the Whig Party, which favored stronger congressional control and a more limited presidency. He supported economic development, like better roads and transportation networks, to help expand the growing nation. He also believed in westward expansion, though his actions toward Native American tribes remain a major point of controversy. Harrison didn’t get enough time in office to put many policies into action, but he planned to run a more cooperative government than his predecessors. His political messaging was built around being a “man of the people,” even though he came from old Virginia wealth. His election showed how important image-building had become in politics. In a way, he helped kick off the era of big campaign branding.
