What political roles did Buchanan hold before becoming president?

Buchanan had one of the longest political résumés of any president. He served in the Pennsylvania legislature, the House of Representatives, the Senate, and even worked as Secretary of State. He also spent several years as a diplomat in Britain, which boosted his foreign policy experience. By the time he ran for president, he had pretty much done everything except actually be president. People liked that he seemed steady, experienced, and well-rounded. He never came off as radical, which made him appealing during a tense era. His long career made him look like the “safe” choice at the time.
