What was James Buchanan’s family background and ethnicity?

Buchanan was born in Pennsylvania to a family of Scotch-Irish descent, and his parents ran a successful frontier store. He grew up in a big family with several siblings, so he learned responsibility early. His father pushed education and hard work, which ended up shaping Buchanan’s personality a lot. Even though he wasn’t born into wealth, his family eventually became pretty comfortable financially. He had that classic frontier upbringing mixed with a solid work ethic. His background helped him rise socially and politically. It also gave him a strong sense of discipline that stayed with him for life.
