Tyler had a long resume before reaching national office. He served in the Virginia legislature, then moved on to the U.S. House of Representatives, and later became governor of Virginia. He also spent time in the U.S. Senate, where he earned a reputation for being stubbornly independent. Tyler originally belonged to the Democratic Party but broke with them over states’ rights issues, eventually joining the Whigs. His political loyalties shifted more than once, which sometimes made him hard to pin down. By the time he became vice president, he had decades of political experience.
