Fillmore came from a poor family of English ancestry living in upstate New York. He grew up on a frontier farm with very little money, and his childhood was basically nonstop hard work. He didn’t have access to good schools, so he taught himself a lot of what he knew. His early life gave him a simple, humble style that stuck with him even as he climbed into politics. People liked that he wasn’t born into privilege like many politicians of the time. His background made him relatable to everyday Americans. It also shaped the way he approached leadership.
