What was Van Buren’s personal life like outside of politics?

Van Buren married his childhood sweetheart, Hannah Hoes, but she sadly died years before he became president. He never remarried and raised their children on his own while building his political career. People said he had a calm, polite personality and was known for his neat style and polished manners. He enjoyed hosting gatherings and talking politics, but he could also be pretty private. Friends often mentioned that he had a subtle sense of humor and liked good conversation. After leaving office, he traveled a lot, which wasn’t super common for presidents of that era. He lived a long life and stayed involved in politics even in retirement.
