What was Zachary Taylor’s political stance once he became president?

Taylor was actually pretty moderate for a guy backed by the Whig Party, and he didn’t always follow their expectations. He wanted to keep tensions down between free and slave states, even though he himself was a Southerner and slaveholder. He pushed back against ideas that he thought would cause trouble, especially anything that might tear the country apart. His approach surprised a lot of people who assumed he’d lean heavily toward the South. Instead, he tried to focus on national unity and keeping the peace. He took his role as president seriously even if he wasn’t a typical politician. His stances added fuel to political debates of the time.
