Lincoln personally disliked slavery from a young age, but his political views evolved over time. Early in his career he focused on stopping its spread rather than immediately ending it. As the Civil War went on, he saw clearly that slavery had to go for the nation to survive. The Emancipation Proclamation was a major step, freeing enslaved people in Confederate areas. Later he pushed hard for the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery entirely. His thinking moved from cautious to bold as events unfolded. That evolution is a big part of his historical importance.
