Why did Van Buren’s presidency face so many challenges?

His presidency hit trouble almost immediately because of the Panic of 1837, a financial crisis that caused banks to collapse and unemployment to spike. Even though the crisis started before he took office, he got blamed for it by critics. Van Buren believed the government shouldn’t interfere too much in the economy, so he avoided big federal rescue plans. This made some people think he didn’t care, even though he was trying to stick to his political principles. The economic downturn lasted for years, hurting his popularity badly. By the time reelection came around, voters were ready for someone new. It’s one of the main reasons his presidency is often judged harshly today.
