Taylor’s views surprised a lot of people because he was a Southern slaveholder, yet he didn’t want slavery spreading into the lands gained from the Mexican-American War. He believed that expansion would stir up more national conflict and make everything harder to manage. He also thought the new territories weren’t suited for plantation slavery anyway. His stance put him at odds with powerful Southern leaders who expected him to support their agenda. Instead, he tried to keep the country from blowing up politically. Even though he didn’t take an abolitionist view, he did call for stability first. That made him a controversial figure in both regions.
