To keep the public from panicking during a financial crisis, doctors secretly performed surgery on a yacht in the middle of the ocean. They removed part of his jaw, and the whole thing stayed hidden for years. Cleveland recovered well and kept doing his presidential duties. The secrecy worked so well that many people didn’t believe the story until decades later. It’s still one of the most dramatic medical events in White House history.
