Roosevelt was a pioneering conservationist who believed the nation needed to protect its natural resources for future generations. During his presidency he established numerous national forests, wildlife refuges and five national parks, rapidly expanding federal conservation efforts. He worked with scientists and advisers to create a professional forestry service and to manage timber and water resources more sustainably. Roosevelt saw conservation as both a moral duty and a practical necessity for national prosperity. His policies saved vast tracts of wilderness that might otherwise have been lost to unregulated exploitation. Today’s national parks system owes a huge debt to his initiatives. He combined love of the outdoors with practical governance to leave a lasting environmental legacy.
