How did William Howard Taft become president if he didn’t really want the job?

Taft basically ended up in the White House because his wife, his family, and Theodore Roosevelt pushed him into it. Roosevelt practically hand-picked him as his successor and thought Taft would continue his policies. Taft agreed mostly out of loyalty, not passion. When he finally got into office, he realised the job was way more stressful and messy than he expected. Politics wasn’t his favourite arena, and sometimes he struggled with public pressure. Still, he tried to be honest and fair. His presidency is often described as competent but not very flashy.
