How did William McKinley’s presidency come to an end?

McKinley’s second term ended tragically when he was assassinated in 1901 during a public event in Buffalo, New York. He was greeting a line of visitors when an anarchist shot him at close range. Despite getting medical attention, he died several days later from infection. The country was shocked because McKinley was widely liked and seen as a steady hand. His death brought Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency much earlier than expected. Many people see McKinley as a calm figure whose life ended far too suddenly. His assassination is one of the major turning points in early 20th-century America.
