What did Chester A. Arthur do before becoming president?

Before the presidency, Arthur built a career as a lawyer and later worked in government jobs tied to customs and tariffs. His most famous role was serving as the Collector of the Port of New York, which was a powerful job back then. He was involved with the Republican Party and became known as a loyal political organiser. Arthur eventually became vice president under Garfield in 1881. When Garfield was assassinated, Arthur unexpectedly stepped into the presidency. Many wondered what direction he’d take. He ended up surprising critics by supporting reform instead of political machines.
