After leaving the presidency, Hayes went back to Ohio and focused on education and social causes. He didn’t stay involved in politics the way some ex-presidents do. Instead, he supported schools, libraries and prison reform, believing education could fix a lot of social problems. He also advocated for African American rights, even after Reconstruction had ended. Hayes loved being back home and enjoyed the quieter life. Friends say he stayed active in community projects and travelled a bit. He remained respected as a statesman until his death.
