What happened after James A. Garfield’s death?

After Garfield died, the country went into deep mourning because people truly felt his potential had been cut short. His death pushed Congress to pass the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act, which changed federal hiring forever. Vice President Chester A. Arthur became president, even though many people didn’t expect much from him at first. Garfield’s legacy grew over time as historians explored what he could have accomplished. His wife and children also worked hard to preserve his memory. Monuments and memorials were built in his honour. Many Americans still see him as a symbol of unfulfilled promise.
