Harrison had to deal with heated debates over tariffs, money policy, and economic direction in general. People argued nonstop over the gold standard and silver, and he found himself right in the middle of those fights. He pushed for stronger federal oversight of big companies, which led to the Sherman Antitrust Act. Internationally, he worked on improving trade relations and strengthening the Navy. He also handled issues related to Native American policy, though many of those decisions get criticised today. Harrison’s presidency was busy and sometimes controversial, but he didn’t shy away from tough calls. He believed the federal government should play a bigger role in shaping the country’s future.
