Arthur was born to a Scottish-Irish immigrant family in Vermont, and his parents were hardworking and very focused on education. His dad was a preacher who often moved the family around for work. Growing up in a big family gave Arthur a strong sense of responsibility. He married Ellen “Nell” Herndon, a well-loved social figure from Virginia. Together they had children, and people said Arthur was a devoted dad. Sadly, Nell died before he became president, which affected him deeply. Even as president, he kept family close to his heart.
