Garfield grew up in Ohio in a log cabin, so his childhood was about as classic “frontier American” as it gets. He worked on farms, drove canal boats and basically did whatever jobs he could find. Even though he had a rough start, he was known as a bright kid who always wanted to learn more. He read every book he could get his hands on and taught himself subjects most kids never touched. Friends said he had a super friendly personality and made people feel comfortable. He didn’t grow up planning to be president; he just kept chasing opportunities. That drive eventually led him into politics.
