Garfield came from a poor family of English descent, and he was raised mostly by his mum after his dad died when he was just a toddler. Garfield later married Lucretia “Crete” Rudolph, who became a very admired First Lady. Together they had several children and a pretty warm family life. People often said Garfield never forgot his humble roots. That modest background shaped a lot of his worldview as a leader.
