What was Rutherford B. Hayes’s family background and ethnicity?

Hayes came from a family of English ancestry, and his roots in America go back to colonial times. His father died before he was born, so he grew up with his mum and older sister holding things together. The family wasn’t rich, but they valued education and hard work, which shaped his personality. Hayes later married Lucy Webb, who became a hugely popular First Lady. People sometimes called her “Lemonade Lucy” because she didn’t allow alcohol in the White House. Together, they raised eight children, though not all survived to adulthood. Hayes was known as a very dedicated family man.
