What was Rutherford B. Hayes’s political career like before becoming president?

Before hitting the presidency, Hayes served as a congressman and later as the governor of Ohio. He became really popular in the state because he pushed for reforms and stayed away from political drama. He also built a reputation as a Civil War hero, serving as a Union officer and rising to the rank of major general. That military service helped boost his national standing big time. When his party needed someone known as honest and steady, Hayes seemed like the safest pick. He wasn’t a flashy politician, but people respected his integrity. That’s how he ended up becoming the compromise candidate in 1876.
