Before hitting the presidency, Hayes served as a congressman and later as the governor of Ohio. He became really popular in the state because he pushed for reforms and stayed away from political drama. He also built a reputation as a Civil War hero, serving as a Union officer and rising to the rank of major general. That military service helped boost his national standing big time.
