The “Square Deal” was Roosevelt’s domestic programme that aimed to give ordinary Americans fair treatment against big corporate interests. It focused on three main themes: consumer protection, control of corporations, and conservation of natural resources. Roosevelt famously supported trust-busting to break up monopolies he viewed as harmful to competition and public welfare. He also backed food and drug regulation after public scandals exposed unsafe practices. At the same time, he encouraged moderation in labour disputes and sometimes acted as an arbitrator between workers and bosses. His approach was pragmatic—he didn’t reject business, but he wanted it regulated for the common good. Many modern progressive ideas trace their roots to his policy mix.
