Roosevelt was famously energetic—he boxed, hunted, hiked and wrote prolifically, often producing several books a year on varied topics. He suffered personal tragedy early on when his first wife and his mother died on the same day, an event that profoundly affected him. After leaving the White House, he remained politically active and even ran for president again in 1912 as a Progressive (Bull Moose) candidate, splitting the Republican vote. He was also an avid naturalist and traveller, taking long expeditions in Africa and South America. Friends and critics alike remembered him as bold, impatient, blunt and deeply patriotic. He died in 1919 but left a huge cultural imprint as the archetypal energetic reformer-president. His life mixed public service, adventure and constant intellectual curiosity.
