Roosevelt’s foreign policy motto was “speak softly and carry a big stick,” meaning diplomacy backed by credible force. He also brokered the end of the Russo-Japanese War and won the Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation. Overall, he shifted the U.S. toward a more assertive international role. His era marks the start of America as a global power in practical terms.
