Taft was known as a gentle, humorous guy who loved good food, naps, and quiet evenings more than flashy political events. He was married to Helen “Nellie” Taft, who was much more ambitious and politically driven than he was. She pushed him toward the White House even when he wasn’t sure he wanted the job. Taft was also a devoted father and liked spending time with his kids. He struggled with weight issues his whole life and often joked about it himself. Friends say he preferred peaceful routines over political fights. His personality was more relaxed than the typical president’s.
