What was Woodrow Wilson’s stance on civil rights, and why is it controversial today?

This part of Wilson’s legacy is heavily criticised today. Despite his progressive agenda in economics and government, he supported racial segregation in federal agencies. His administration even worsened conditions for many Black federal employees. Wilson also praised the film “The Birth of a Nation,” which is widely considered racist and damaging. Supporters at the time saw him as a reformer, but modern historians view this part of his record very negatively. It’s a reminder that political progress isn’t always consistent across all areas. His racial policies remain one of the most debated parts of his presidency.
