Despite a tough childhood, Garfield managed to attend the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute, which later became Hiram College. He did so well there that he actually returned as a teacher and then became the school's president. Later, he studied at Williams College in Massachusetts, where he graduated with honours. Education was a huge part of his life, and he loved learning almost anything. He studied languages, math, literature and even taught classical subjects. His academic background made him one of the most intellectual presidents ever. People who knew him said he could talk about anything for hours.
