Who was James A. Garfield and why is he remembered today?

James A. Garfield was the 20th U.S. president, but sadly he’s mostly remembered because his time in office was cut short by an assassination. He served only a few months before being shot, which makes his presidency one of the shortest ever. Garfield was actually a super smart guy with a big political future ahead of him. He had strong ideas about civil service reform and wanted to clean up corruption in Washington. Even in that short time, he made a great impression as a thoughtful and energetic leader. Many historians believe he could have done a lot more if he’d had a full term.
