Who was Rutherford B. Hayes and what is he best known for?

Rutherford B. Hayes was the 19th president of the United States, and he’s mostly known for the super close and controversial 1876 election. People often describe him as the guy who helped end the Reconstruction era after the Civil War, which still sparks debates today. He had a pretty calm personality and tried to bring honesty back into government after years of corruption scandals. Hayes also pushed for civil service reform because he hated the old “spoils system.” Even though his presidency wasn’t flashy, he focused a lot on healing divisions in the country. Many Americans today see him as a stabiliser during a messy political moment. He served only one term because he promised not to run again.
