Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States and one of the most energetic, influential leaders of the early 20th century. He rocketed to national fame as a Rough Rider volunteer leader during the Spanish–American War and then rode that popularity into politics. As president he pushed a progressive agenda called the “Square Deal,” which aimed to protect consumers, break up bad trusts and regulate big business. Roosevelt also modernised the Navy and positioned the U.S. as an emerging world power. He was famous for his go-getter personality, love of the outdoors and willingness to use executive power boldly. People remember him for mixing reform at home with robust foreign policy abroad. His style and accomplishments still shape how many Americans picture the modern presidency.
